The Rhythm We All Carry

Esther Guti茅rrez Sloan shares about her Nature and Rhythm classes.

Esther Guti茅rrez Sloan was four years old when she started dancing in Colombia. She was twelve when her family moved to the United States, carrying that rhythm with her the whole way. Decades later, standing beside the water at the 小优短视频 as a fitness instructor, she鈥檚 sharing her love of dance with anyone willing to take a step.

A recent recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Fitness Hall of Fame, Esther has created something special over her 38-year career. She鈥檒l teach you the cha-cha, the salsa, the merengue鈥斺漛ackward, forward, sideways, upside down鈥濃攂ut once you have the basics, she invites you to make it yours.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not that you鈥檙e learning choreography. You鈥檙e learning to feel the rhythm in yourself,鈥 says Esther. 鈥淚t鈥檚 your recipe. You already have the ingredients鈥攜our body, your emotion鈥攁nd you use them.鈥 That鈥檚 the philosophy of her signature SALSArobics.

For Esther, music is a living, cultural experience rather than a soundtrack to a workout. While the fitness industry cycles through trends, she鈥檚 quick to point out culture is not a phase. 鈥淎 cha-cha rhythm is not going to go out of style,鈥 she says. 鈥淥ur music, the traditional music, never goes out of style.鈥

She calls the garden 鈥渁 safe place鈥 for people to move without self-consciousness. It鈥檚 a place people already love, the way they love a song. And just as we connect with nature on a deep level, so too does music activate a core part of what it means to be human. 鈥淲hen someone says 鈥業 have two left feet,鈥 I put on a song and say, 鈥榊ou walked here with those two left feet. Walk to the beat,鈥欌 says Esther. 鈥淚t鈥檚 already inside us. It鈥檚 intrinsic.鈥

That welcome extends to the workout itself, adjusted for whoever shows up. 鈥淵ou can do the music at half the tempo. You can do it at the tempo. You can double the tempo. And if you want to get athletic with it, you can dance-jog!鈥

And then there鈥檚 the joy of it. Esther often teaches her Nature and Rhythm classes in the outdoors of the Garden itself. People passing by stop and take videos. Toddlers jump out of strollers to join in. She once taught a class while a 70th birthday party took place in the garden next door. 鈥淭he party ended up dancing with us,鈥 Esther laughs, 鈥済randmother with her seven-year-old granddaughter and the whole family.鈥

This Hispanic Heritage Month, Esther鈥檚 story is a celebration of culture as a shared, joyful invitation. 鈥淢ovement is ageless. Whether you鈥檙e 7 or 70.鈥 Here, everyone is welcome on the dance floor. Explore Wellness & Fitness classes at the Regenstein School at the 小优短视频.
